road trip with the family

today the whole hayes gang went on a road trip!  i've known for a week that we were going to go, so i had time to plan.  i searched and searched for something really cool to go see within the time limit we had, but i couldn't find anything.  so we just kind of winged it.

hey daryl, want some corn nuts?
daryl has serious issues with corn nuts, i'm afraid.  when he was a youth minister those things were not allowed on the church van because he hates the way they smell.  so when spencer opened up a bag of them, he immediately started griping!  i really don't think they smell bad.  they just smell like fritos to me.

so as we were going down the road at 65 miles an hour, the big nerd rolled down all the windows in the car and locked them so we couldn't roll them back up!  he just smirked and said, "as long as the corn nuts are open, the windows are staying down."  colby started yelling to roll the windows up, and i was laughing so hard i was crying!  in the end, daryl won.

our first stop was the bowling ball yard art place.  colby wanted to go there because he'd only been once, and he wanted daryl to see it, too.  now our whole family has been!

after that we headed to vinita, oklahoma for an early lunch.  we ate at clanton's cafe because it was featured on food network's "diners, drive-ins and dives" for its chicken fried steak and calf fries!  of course none of us chose the calf fries, but everything we ordered was yummy!!!  the best part of the meal, though, was the dessert.  daryl and i both got a piece of coconut cream pie, and it was by far the best i've ever eaten!  (sorry dad, yours is good, but they used whipped cream instead of meringue )  so if you are ever in vinita, definitely go by clanton's.
clanton's cafe
then we headed toward parsons, kansas.  there was nothing there to see.  it just fit our time frame of an hour and a half from bartlesville, and it was some place none of us had ever been.
i just liked it!

this sign was the best part of parsons
after driving through several towns and stopping at a few antique stores, we headed for independence, kansas.  we ended up at the riverside park and ralph mitchell zoo.  it was really a fun place to go!

gigantic slide

the merry-go-round was always a favorite of mine!

an old train you could climb on

a sign said this was a "vicious swan"

turtles still make me smile

staring contest
the really funny thing about these three monkeys is they were all staring at the humans who were looking at them!  there were 7 or 8 people just standing there looking at them, and neither species moved!
they really do like each other!

i love my 3 boys !

teeny tiny happy little red plant!
the ralph mitchell zoo had lots of animal statues all around the playground in kiddy land.  colby wanted his picture taken with ALL of them!  here are a few:
colby, the turtle

colby, the brave
rhino boy

have you hugged a rhino today?

hey!  quit picking my nose you silly rhino!

ribbitt

ahhhhh!!!  spider!!!!

daryl, the bump on a log!
he said that, not me!

oh, no!  a lion is trying to eat me!

humpty dumpty

my man and me!

colby, the crocodile hunter

i dared colby to sniff the skunk's hiney!

i kissed a skunk!

"hey, colby!  wanna race?"

my horse is too small!
one exhibit at this little zoo is monkey island.  it was home to the first monkey to ever go into outer space!  now a bunch of capuchin monkeys live there.  they were so fun to watch!  the vicious swan swims in a moat around their castle protecting them!

after the zoo, we had supper at the big cheese pizza place. good food...a little pricey, though.

and on the way home, god gave us a beautiful kansas sunset to enjoy!  what a great day!
